First Harvest!

Today, May 22nd, I harvested the first thing from this year's garden.

Broccoli Rabe (Rappi) that, with the July-like temps of the last few days, flowered yesterday, way earlier than I expected. The stalks really didn't have enough time to get very big around and they were a little tough at the bottom. Certainly not the best veggie that I've ever harvested from my yard, but as the first this year, it was still pretty darn great.

I sauteed these up with some olive and sesame oils and then added some of the Chineese Green Onion Sauce that my husband whipped up for the Chineese wings he grilled tonight.

  1. Yay! I have strawberries growing already (they're tiny but cute)--for the past week or so. My raspberries are coming out, and I have used a bit of dill. My issue--the SQUIRRELS! Any advice? I have lots of peat pots with veggies to put in the ground this weekend and the squirrels usually destroy them.

Do you know of a semi-humane way to tackle this?

  2. Karley,

Nature abhors a vacuum I guess because since I put up the deer fence the squirrels have been going crazy. Just this morning I tried the trick of running outside braless in a tank top waving my arms around to scare the squirrels away. It worked but I don't think it's along term solution!!!

I just put in strawberries as well and have a few little babies on them. Raspberries are something I don't have but would really like!

  3. I have some wild raspberries if you want. They grow little crazy but then again I don't do a good job at containing the.

I made eggs this morning for my family and added my chives. OH my LO liked chewing on them but didn't want them in her eggs. Go figure.

I have issues with squirrels and chipmunks.
